The UTF-8 preamble (), also known as the UTF-8 BOM or signature, is a 3 byte sequence at the start of a file indicating it is UTF-8. Like the UTF-16 BOM, this is not particular to XML, it is for any text file. But unlike the UTF-16 BOM, Byte Order Mark is not a correct term in this case because in UTF-8 there is no byte order. In hex, the UTF-8 preamble is ef bb bf.

While the UTF-16 BOM is standard, the UTF-8 preamble is not widely accepted and it is discouraged on UNIX operating systems. Microsoft Notepad uses the UTF-8 preamble when it saves UTF-8 documents, but does not need it to recognize UTF-8 encoding when it loads files. The 3 byte UTF-8 preamble is not recommended in XML files because if the file begins with an ASCII less than sign, it is already assumed to be UTF-8 unless the XML Declaration specifies another encoding.

The Unicode Byte-Order Mark (BOM) in UTF-8 encoded files is known to cause problems for some text editors and older browsers. You may want to consider avoiding its use until it is better supported.

Jeff is a large orange tomcat that lives and kills in Shadow Hills, CA.

Jeff has adopted our back porch and yard as his home. He uses our dog’s house when it rains, but mostly he likes to sleep on our patio chairs and keep watch over his domain.

Though he doesn’t really belong to us, we provide Jeff with food and water; however, this does little to lessen his killer instinct. To humans, Jeff is an exceptionally good-tempered and friendly cat; to rodents and other small animals, he is death itself.

It could be that Jeff likes to bring us gifts to repay our hospitality. Perhaps he is simply a hardwired killing machine. All we know for certain is that he hunts down a wide variety of small animals and disembowels, decapitates, and dines on them. Often.

Flock 0.7.1 Released

If you’re using Flock already, you should have received the request to update to Flock 0.7.1 by now. The release is an incremental update that tightens up some inconsistencies that were causing issues in the photobar. If you’ve been having weird problems with using photos and logging into services, hopefully this should clear it up.

From the release notes:

• Logging in to Flickr now works on Windows with avast! anti-virus software installed, and Flock should no longer be able to have duplicate photo favorites in the photobar.
• Experimental ability to use FireFox extensions that have not yet been made Flock compatible has been added. There is now a warning that must be responded to before the extension install proceeds.
